Kunisaki & Yufuin Walking Retreat

Late March – Early April 2022 (Exact Dates TBA)

The Kunisaki & Yufuin Walking Retreat is a fully-guided tour that we recommend for the reasonably fit who can walk comfortably for five to six hours. The route is mainly on forest trails and includes some rock scrambling and some short, steep climbs.

Meditation & Yoga will be a key feature of this moving retreat, however they are not compulsory to participate.

A 7-day, 6-night tour starting in Fukuoka and finishing in Yufuin. Accommodation is in Japanese inns, many with onsen thermal hot spring baths, a temple and a hotel.

The trek retraces the pilgrimage paths of monks who made the mountains of the Kunisaki Peninsula their refuge for more than a thousand years. We will walk mysterious, ancient and forgotten paths through forest, ridges and quiet valleys. We will encounter many Buddhist relief carvings that have been protected largely due to the isolation of the Kunisaki peninsula.

You will stretch and center with daily yoga and meditation that will prepare you to move through sleepy Japanese country villages, experience their unique culture, amazing cuisine and soothe your aching muscles in the onsen hot springs.

Just to the south-east of Kunisaki is Yufuin. This small, upmarket town rests at the base of Mount Yufudake, an extinct volcano. The town boasts some of the finest ryokan inns that Japan offers. Besides being a good base for the ascent of Yufudake, Yufuin is also ideal for browsing and shopping.

The Kunisaki Trek tour includes some high, narrow ridge trails and short climbs requiring the use of fixed chains. It is recommended for fit individuals who are comfortable with heights.
